When Is the Best Time to Visit Masai Mara?
The Masai Mara is a year-round destination — every month offers exceptional wildlife sightings. But the experience varies significantly by season, and understanding this will help you choose the visit that aligns with your priorities.
July – October: Peak Season & Great Migration
This is when the Mara River crossings happen — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth. Between 1.5 and 2 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra cross from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Masai Mara, often in enormous surging herds that take hours to cross. Massive Nile crocodiles wait in the river. The air fills with dust, the sound is extraordinary, and every game drive carries the possibility of witnessing something genuinely unforgettable.
Be aware: July–October is peak season, which means more vehicles at popular sightings and higher accommodation rates. Book at least 6 months in advance for the best camps during this period.

January – March: Calving Season & Fewest Crowds
This is my personal favourite time in the Mara, and I tell every guest who asks. The wildebeest calving season brings an extraordinary concentration of big cats — cheetahs, lions, and leopards are all at peak activity as they take advantage of the abundance of young calves. Guest numbers are lower, accommodation rates are reduced, and you'll often have sightings entirely to yourself.
April – June: The Green Season
The long rains bring dramatic skies and a lush, photogenic landscape. Wildlife disperses more widely as water and grass are abundant everywhere, making sightings slightly more challenging — but when you do find animals, you're usually alone with them. This is also when rates are at their lowest.
The Big Five & Beyond: Wildlife You'll See
The Masai Mara is one of very few places in Africa where you can genuinely expect to see all five of the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, and black rhino — within a single safari stay. Here's what to expect for each species:
- African Lion: The Mara has one of the highest lion densities in Africa. Multiple prides occupy defined territories, and our guides know their locations intimately. Sighting rate: ~95%.
- Leopard: The most secretive of the big cats, but the Mara's fig and fever trees along the Talek River are famous leopard territory. Patient, experienced guides find them reliably. Sighting rate: ~70%.
- Elephant: Large herds roam the Mara plains year-round. You will see elephants on every single game drive without exception. Sighting rate: ~99%.
- Cape Buffalo: Massive herds of buffalo graze across the reserve. Often seen in groups of several hundred. Sighting rate: ~99%.
- Black Rhino: Rare but present in the Mara — usually found in the Mara Triangle section. Our guides know the current territories. Sighting rate: ~40%.
- Cheetah: The open Mara plains are perfect cheetah habitat. Coalition groups of male cheetahs are particularly active during calving season. Sighting rate: ~80%.
