3-Day Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Bwindi

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe & Transfer to Bwindi
Arrival in Entebbe and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Arrival in Entebbe: Arrive at Entebbe International Airport. Depending on your arrival time, you can either fly directly into Kihihi or Kayonza airstrip near Bwindi (private flight) or take a long scenic drive. Transfer to Bwindi: From Entebbe, you’ll drive approximately 8-10 hours to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This can be a scenic and picturesque journey, crossing through the lush landscapes of Uganda’s countryside. Overnight in Bwindi: Check-in at your lodge/hotel. Options like Buhoma Lodge or Silverback Lodge offer great comfort and views of the forest.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Early Morning Breakfast: Start early to fuel up for the trek. Gorilla trekking starts with a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. They will provide information on the dos and don’ts when trekking and encountering gorillas. Gorilla Trekking: You will head out to one of the designated trekking points depending on the gorilla family assigned to you (Bwindi has several trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo). The trek duration varies from 2-8 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. The goal is to track and spend 1 hour observing a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. What to expect: The trek will be a mix of hiking through dense forest, sometimes uphill, and can be physically demanding, but the reward is incredible as you get close to these magnificent creatures. Post Trekking: After spending your allotted hour with the gorillas, you’ll return to your lodge for a rest. Afternoon: If you’re up for it, you can take a village walk to visit the local Batwa pygmy communities, who have a rich cultural heritage tied to the forest. Evening at Leisure: Relax at your lodge with dinner and perhaps a local cultural performance or storytelling session.
Day 3: Nature Walk & Return to Entebbe
Explore Bwindi or Alternative Activities Morning Nature Walk: After the excitement of the previous day, enjoy a more relaxed morning with a nature walk through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The forest is also home to numerous birds, primates, and other wildlife. Optional Activities: Visit the local communities to learn more about the culture and traditions of the people around Bwindi. Take a scenic flight back to Entebbe if you have a flight to catch. Visit Lake Bunyonyi for a peaceful boat ride and to explore the area. Transfer to Entebbe: In the afternoon or evening, begin your drive back to Entebbe for your onward flight, depending on your flight time. Additional Notes Gorilla Permit: You must secure a gorilla trekking permit in advance. These can be quite limited, so book early (around $700- $1,500 USD per permit). Packing Essentials: Wear sturdy hiking boots, long sleeves, and pants (for protection against thorns). Bring a waterproof jacket, a hat, gloves, and a camera (without flash). Best Time for Trekking: The dry season (June to September and December to February) is ideal for trekking. However, Uganda’s weather can be unpredictable, so prepare for rain.
